REENACTOR INFORMATION SECTION

Notes on the Camp

The camp will be a closed camp which means “uniformed” crown forces will not be visiting our camp during daylight hours with out a pass and or an escort.  Visiting crown forces are welcome if they remove uniform articles that identify them as a soldier of the crown.  It is my understanding that the crown forces will have the same restrictions.

As was done for the 225th, there will be an area in the center of the American Camp that will be designated as an authentic area. There will be an earthen camp kitchen in this area and the use of brush arbors will be encouraged.  Soldiers will be expected to carry themselves with military bearing and extend military courtesies to officers while in this area.  As this area will most likely be filmed during the weekend, anyone wishing to perform period correct activities such as weapon or clothing maintenance may wish to stage them there.

Camp Provost – A provost officer and staff will be appointed for the weekend.  The provost’s duties will be to enforce basic camp authenticity i.e. ensuring that items such as lantern stands, extraneous furniture, hay bales etc. are not in the company streets during public hours. In addition the provost will be enforcing the no vehicles in camp rules.  Vehicles will only be allowed in camp for off loading of equipment starting Friday at 9:00 AM till Saturday 9:00 AM.  No vehicles will be permitted in camp after 9:00 AM Saturday till camp breakdown at 3:30 PM on Sunday.  American camp parking will be in an adjacent field a few minutes walk of the camp.  If you arrive late to the event you will need to carry your equipment to camp.

Scenarios

In an effort to produce a realistic scenario for the public and the proposed interpretive video the park is attempting to put together, there will be a cast of mounted officers portraying the major players of the original engagement.

The Continental infantry will be split in two to form Lee and Wayne’s forces.  The Saturdays force assignments will be switched for Sunday’s engagement to allow everyone to get a full Monmouth experience.  The requested uniform of the event is white or natural frock coats, however, regimentals other period correct garments are acceptable.

The militia will be formed into a militia battalion and will portray the NJ Militia that harassed the British march across NJ.

The light infantry and some “picked men” will be forming what was Col. Ciley’s command.  This unit’s action is described by Joseph Plumb Martin in “Private Yankee Doodle”.  We are asking that the light infantry refrain from wearing late war helmets for this event.

The Artillery will be working both as battalion guns and battery. As this is one of the largest artillery engagements of the war bring lots of rounds.

We are tentatively planning picket duties and patrols for Saturday night and Sunday morning.  These activities will be dependent on weather and interest.  Matt Murphy of the 2nd NJ will be coordinating these activities.  You can indicate your interest in these and other activities on the event registration form.

I look forward to serving with you all this upcoming season,

Paul Hutchins
2nd NJ, Helms Coy.

Event Video

The event will be video documented by Lion Heart Films. This video will be available for sale to re-enactors and will be used to produce an interpretive film for the park.  The park will also be able to raise money by selling the video at its visitor center.

Lion Heart will be embedding cameras on and around the battlefield and camps.  The film crew’s activities will be coordinated with the command staff to prevent any unsafe conditions and to insure that there are no conflicts with our activities.  In an effort to produce the most authentic video possible we are asking for all participants to be either clean shaven or limit them to three days growth of facial hair.  If for whatever reason shaving is not possible, individuals may be asked to “hide” when filming is occurring.
